Plasticity and adaption to environmental stressors: intraspecific variation as a window into climate change-resilience in fish

Abstract: As our climate warms, aquatic organisms such as fish are exposed to a complex set of interacting environmental stressors that may push them beyond their current tolerance limits. As such, the fundamental biogeographical principle of ‘adapt, move or die’ has perhaps never been more relevant. In this talk I will explore some of our ongoing studies examining how processes such as phenotypic plasticity, epigenetic effects, and genetic variation within and among populations influence the capacity of species and populations to cope with climate change stressors, and show how this information can be useful for managers and policy makers as we attempt to conserve fish biodiversity into the future.
