Nominations for GE Graduate Assistant Awards

The General Education Committee will resume naming recipients of Graduate Assistant Teaching Awards for contributions to the GE Program during the Fall 2018 – Spring 2019 or Fall 2019 – Spring 2020 academic year.  The GE Committee will continue to recognize faculty who taught last year in the GE program, as was done for the year before.  This year, we will add awards for graduate assistants, who are contributing in many ways through this challenging time. 

Graduate Assistants who served as Teaching Assistants in labs or discussions sections during either of the two prior academic years are eligible to be recognized this spring, unless they have already received this award.  If you have a graduate assistant in your academic unit who provided outstanding service to undergraduates in the GE Program, please nominate that person for an award.  Up to six recipients may be selected, each of whom will receive an award of $1000. 

This is a difficult time to gather materials, so we are asking for a simplified nomination.  Please select a single recipient from your academic unit for a letter of nomination, plus any quantitative data you have on their teaching evaluations.  If you have a syllabus or sample assignment from their lab or discussion section, please include that as well.  All materials should be collected in a single pdf file so they can be shared among members of the selection committee, emailed to gened@usc.edu, by 5 pm on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

CET Future Faculty Teaching Institute

The Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET) announces the CET Future Faculty Teaching Institute, a semester-long training program that prepares graduate students, planning to pursue academic careers, with an essential background in pedagogy. Students should be enrolled in doctoral or other terminal degree programs and have some TA or teaching experience. Participants who complete the entire program (a minimum of 12 workshops) will be awarded a teaching excellence certificate and can indicate completion of the institute on their CVs. Schools should encourage their graduate students to sign up.

The CET Future Faculty Teaching Institute comprises a series of 14 hands-on, catered lunch workshops throughout the Fall 2018 semester.

The workshops are designed to provide future faculty:
• Best practices for higher ed course design
• Essential pedagogy for teaching and learning
• Strategies for developing an inclusive learning environment
• Practical techniques to enhance student learning
• Opportunities for collaborative peer review

A sampling of specific workshop topics include:
• Facilitating challenging discussions
• Incorporating strategic questioning
• Enhancing student-instructor and student-student interaction
• Designing for multimedia instruction
• Creating effective assessment practices

Gifts will be raffled off for each session.

Participants may elect to attend either the Monday (12:00-1:00) or Tuesday (12:30-1:30) cohort on the UPC campus (room TBA).

NSF Teaching Fellowship at Claremont Graduate University

The Claremont Colleges STEM Initiative (CCSI), an NSF funded project at Claremont Graduate University (CGU), has a fellowship opportunity for individuals that have or will be graduating with a degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The project provides 100% tuition and training to become a certified math or science teacher in an area public school. They are currently accepting applications for the 2017-2018 cohort.

On your interview day you will meet many people and only have a minute or two to explain to them your academic interests. This program will allow you to practice! An overview of a typical interviewing day will be presented. Following this, you will break into small groups, where you will have a chance to explain your research interests in a short one or two minute description.
