Research and Fellowships Week
Research and Fellowships Week is an annual event hosted by USC’s Academic Honors and Fellowships, the Graduate School and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. The goal of the week is to discuss opportunities that support research, graduate study, language learning, teaching and internships within the U.S. and abroad. The sessions are open to students of all academic levels, staff and faculty, attendees participate in interactive panels and workshops to explore USC programs and external post-graduate possibilities.

Graduate Research Opportunities at DOE National Laboratories
The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2019 Solicitation 2. Applications are due 5:00pm Eastern Time on Thursday, November 14, 2019.
Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at: https://science.osti.gov/wdts/scgsr/.
The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.
The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis/dissertation while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the host DOE laboratories/facilities. The supplemental award provides for additional, incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory/facility during the award period.
The Office of Science expects to make approximately 70 awards in 2019 Solicitation 2 cycle, for project periods beginning anytime between June 15, 2020 and October 5, 2020.
Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over 480 graduate awardees from 135 different U.S. universities to conduct thesis research at 18 DOE national laboratories/facilities across the nation.
The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and the DOE national laboratories/facilities, and program administration support is provided by the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE).

Gilliam 2020 Competition
I am pleased to invite you to nominate colleagues from your university for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s 2020 Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study. These three-year fellowships will be awarded to adviser-student pairs, with each pair comprising an eligible graduate student engaged in her/his PhD dissertation research and the thesis adviser. In 2020 we anticipate making 40-45 awards. The program announcement that provides details about the program, including eligibility criteria, can be downloaded from http://www.hhmi.org/gilliam.
You may nominate a total of 2 adviser-student pairs from University of Southern California.
Prospective fellows must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or other immigrants to the U.S., from racial, ethnic, or other groups recognized in the U.S. as underrepresented in the sciences or Alumni of the HHMI EXROP, be at the appropriate program stage of their PhD training and in an eligible discipline.
We expect the nominator to work with others to identify nominees and gather information to respond to the prompts listed below. Please forward the program information to all appropriate departments and programs.
The nomination initiates the application process and all the materials and information provided will shape the judgments of the reviewers. The nomination will include responses to three questions about how the adviser-student pair fits the eligibility criteria and requirements specific to this fellowship. The questions must be completed by a knowledgeable senior institutional representative who can speak and commit on the institution’s behalf.
1. How and why was the specific adviser-student pair internally selected?
2. What is the evidence that the adviser’s department is committed to advancing diversity and inclusion in science?
3. What is the evidence that the graduate program and/or department values career and professional development in the sciences?
4. How has/will HHMI's Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study help to improve the quality of the graduate program and create an inclusive environment?
In addition, the nominator will be asked to complete a table on doctoral enrollment/degree attainment and support the data with a statement about the institution’s context-specific commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the sciences. The nominator must also provide a letter of support that describes that adviser’s interest, demonstrated ability, and commitment to develop the talents of students, especially those from underrepresented groups.
The competition system will open for nominee submissions in early September. The nominator identified in this letter will be provided with login information and instructions via email on how to access the system at that time. The deadline for submission of your nominations is 2:00 p.m. ET, October 18, 2019.
This year, the Pathway system requires that the nominated thesis adviser confirm his/her participation before the nomination form can be submitted. After the nominator inputs the adviser name, the system will generate an email prompting the adviser to confirm participation.
After HHMI has received and reviewed the information for each adviser-student pair, we will contact eligible nominees directly with instructions for submitting an online application. It is the responsibility of the nominated pair to submit a complete application to HHMI by the January 3, 2020, deadline. Institutions and applicants will be notified of the outcome of the competition via email in June 2020.
Questions may be directed to gilliam@hhmi.org. For technical questions related to the electronic nominee submission, a toll-free number and online help service will be available when the designated individual logs into the electronic nomination system.

External Fellowship writing workshop for early career PhD students
WiSE is gauging interest for a writing workshop in the late Spring and early Fall for eligible WiSE graduate students interested in applying for one of the upcoming external fellowships e.g. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program.
The workshops are intended to review the application components in depth, help participants brainstorm and write their statements, and facilitate peer and faculty review of the finished materials. The workshops will be designed to accommodate the schedules of participants during each semester.
If you are interested in participating, please fill out this short interest survey by next Wednesday, March 6. A follow-up email will be sent to with more information.

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program honors female scientists at a critical stage in their careers with grants of $60,000 each. Since 2003, we’ve awarded 75 postdoctoral women scientists nearly $4 million in grants. We’re seeking five exceptional female scientists looking to advance their research and serve as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM.
Candidates are selected from a variety of fields including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering, and mathematics. Candidates must have completed their PhD and have started in their postdoctoral position by the application deadline.

Chateaubriand Fellowship for PhD students
The Chateaubriand Fellowship is a grant offered by the Embassy of France in the United States. Every year, it allows doctoral students enrolled in American universities to conduct research in France for 4 to 9 months. Chateaubriand fellows receive a stipend, a round trip ticket to France and health insurance.

Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs: Predoctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is accepting applications for the 2019 Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs. Eligibility and online application information are available on the Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs website.
Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
Eligibility Requirements:

Summer Data Science Fellowship Opportunity
Program: The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. Are you interested in learning more about research at USC? Curious to find out how award opportunities like the Fulbright U.S. Student Program or fellowships for PhD students can fund future graduate study or research abroad? A variety of interactive sessions and panels will be offered to help answer these questions and more! Hear from fellow Trojans, USC Faculty, and Foundation Representatives about how research and competitive fellowships complement one another and help enhance your undergraduate, graduate, and professional career.

Research and Fellowships 101 – 11:00-11:50am
Target Audience: Undergraduates
What is research? What is a fellowship? This presentation will offer an introduction to undergraduate research at USC and explain how research experience can be an asset when applying for competitive fellowships such as the Rhodes Scholarship and Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
Warren Bennis Scholars Program – 12:00-12:50pm
Target Audience: Freshmen, Sophomores
The Warren Bennis Scholars Program is a two-year, honors leadership development experience for USC undergraduate students from all academic disciplines, who manifest high leadership potential and a passion for serving society. Each year, approximately 20 students are invited to begin the program in the fall semester of their junior year.
Focus on Ford Fellowships – 1:00-1:50pm
Target Audience: Juniors, Seniors, Early Career PhDs
The Ford Fellowship seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity. In this session, Dr. Rhacel Salazar Parrenas, USC Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies and Regional Ford Liaison will provide an overview of Ford Foundation opportunities that are available to traditionally underrepresented students.
External Fellowships for PhD Students in the Humanities and Social Sciences – 2:00-2:50pm
Target Audience: PhDs
A panel of funded PhDs will discuss opportunities and tips.

Target Audience: Postdoctoral Scholars, PhDs, Doctoral, Master’s
Staff will present an introduction to working with USC Stevens and cover university intellectual property policies.

Target Audience: Undergraduates – U.S. Citizenship Required
The Boren Scholarship provides funding to study less commonly taught languages for at least six months in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Applicants should have an interest in national security and working for the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
Postdoc Funding Opportunities Workshop and Information Session – 1:00-1:50pm
Target Audience: Postdoctoral Scholars, PhDs
This session will cover postdoc funding opportunities, grant writing techniques, and tips from recent award recipients.
USC Advanced PhD Fellowships – 2:00-2:50pm

Grad School Fellowship Online Course and Fellowship Week
This summer, the Graduate School launched an Online Fellowship Course designed for early career PhDs. The course provides information on the types of funding available to USC PhDs and includes interviews with recipients, resources and tips. All new 2017 PhD students should have been automatically enrolled in the course. They can access it by logging in to the Blackboard system with a USC email ID and password: https://blackboard.usc.edu/webapps/login/.
We also wanted to let you know about the upcoming Research and Fellowship Week that will be held from November 6-10, 2017. A collaboration between Academic Honors and Fellowships, the Graduate School and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, the week will include numerous programs for students from all levels. PBK Scholarship available to final year international graduate students
Two awards, in the amount of $2,000, are available from the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association for international students who will be in the “final year of their program and seeking degrees which are considered “terminal” in their field,” i.e. PhD or MFA.
Completed copies of the attached application should be uploaded to https://app.wizehive.com/apps/USCPBK as a single PDF by Friday, May 5, 2017. Two letters of recommendation should be sent to gradfllw@usc.edu by the end of the day on Friday, May 5, 2017.
