Nominations for GE Graduate Assistant Awards

The General Education Committee will resume naming recipients of Graduate Assistant Teaching Awards for contributions to the GE Program during the Fall 2018 – Spring 2019 or Fall 2019 – Spring 2020 academic year.  The GE Committee will continue to recognize faculty who taught last year in the GE program, as was done for the year before.  This year, we will add awards for graduate assistants, who are contributing in many ways through this challenging time.

Graduate Assistants who served as Teaching Assistants in labs or discussions sections during either of the two prior academic years are eligible to be recognized this spring, unless they have already received this award.  If you have a graduate assistant in your academic unit who provided outstanding service to undergraduates in the GE Program, please nominate that person for an award.  Up to six recipients may be selected, each of whom will receive an award of $1000

This is a difficult time to gather materials, so we are asking for a simplified nomination.  Please select a single recipient from your academic unit for a letter of nomination, plus any quantitative data you have on their teaching evaluations.  If you have a syllabus or sample assignment from their lab or discussion section, please include that as well.  All materials should be collected in a single pdf file so they can be shared among members of the selection committee, emailed to gened@usc.edu, by 5 pm on Wednesday, March 31, 2021

If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you.

Merit Award for Current Doctoral Students - USC Women in Science & Engineering

The Merit Award for Current Doctoral Students is offered to current Ph.D. students at USC who demonstrate exceptional work in their field. Two candidates will be chosen from the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences and two from the Viterbi School of Engineering. Candidates are nominated by the faculty. Each one-year WiSE Fellowship carries a stipend of $1,500. To be eligible for the Merit Awards students must plan to be enrolled full-time for both the upcoming Fall and Spring semesters, be in at least their fourth year of study or passed their qualifying exams, and be funded by a 50%-time research assistantship, teaching assistantship, or fellowship during that period. Expected date of graduation should not be earlier than the spring semester.

Deadline: April 1 to Doug Burleson
Award Amount: $1,500.
Application Form: PhD Merit Award Application Form (Application Guidelines)

Purpose:
The purpose of the WiSE Merit Award is to provide advanced doctoral students with an opportunity to be recognized for their achievements. Surveys have shown that the attrition rate of female doctoral students is significantly higher than that of male doctoral students. The WiSE Program hopes this fellowship will provide support and motivation to students on an academic trajectory who demonstrate dedication to increasing the representation of women in science and engineering.

Selection Criteria:
The WiSE Committee will evaluate the excellence of the candidate’s research, the trajectory of improvement, and any other personal/professional attributes that demonstrate how the Merit Award may encourage the candidate to pursue a career in science and engineering.

Graduate Research Opportunities at DOE National Laboratories

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2018 Solicitation 1.  Applications are due 5:00pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at: https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/

The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.

The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis/dissertation while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the host DOE laboratories/facilities. The supplemental award provides for additional, incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory/facility during the award period.

The Office of Science expects to make approximately 50 awards in 2018 Solicitation 1 cycle, for project periods beginning anytime between October 29, 2018 and March 4, 2019.

Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over 300 graduate awardees from more than 100 different universities to conduct thesis research at 17 DOE national laboratories across the nation.

The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and the DOE national laboratories/facilities, and program administration support is provided by the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE).

For any questions, please contact the SCGSR Program Manager, Dr. Ping Ge, at sc.scgsr@science.doe.gov.
